Diving into a plateful of healthy food can feel like doing your taxes: a necessary evil in order to keep you in the black…jeans you love, that is. But when the food is healthy and tastes great, too? Hallelujah! Luckily, we have some menus that will keep you slim, satisfied and genuinely surprised that healthy food can taste that good. Each one has a healthy dose of protein, which is a waistline watcher’s best friend. Your body actually expends more energy digesting protein than fat or carbs, and protein-rich foods can postpone hunger pangs and boost your energy. Aim for about 50 grams of protein throughout the day and look for sources that are low in fat. Smart choices include my favorite nonfat Greek yogurt (15 g per 8-ounce serving!) or a 4-oz baked salmon fillet.

Try some of the protein-rich meals below, which are part of the 2009 SELF Challenge, our free online slim-down plan. To lose 1 pound a week, eat 1,800 calories; mix and match these meals to find your perfect eating plan.

Just 2 percent of those training to be dietitians have positive or neutral attitudes toward people who are obese, and the rest are moderately biased against their prospective patients, a new study has found.

"Essentially, this shows that future dieticians are not immune to weight bias, and there are negative attitudes toward obese patients that may have a negative impact on the quality of care," said Rebecca Puhl, the study’s lead author and the director of research and stigma initiatives at Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity.

For most of us who are overweight, we seem to have the most fat on our belly. And when someone wants to lose weight, the main thing they really want to do is lose belly fat.

Some say obesity is an epidemic these days, but I beg to differ. I think belly fat is the real epidemic. Yes, there are plenty of people who have fat on their arms and legs, or evenly distributed throughout their bodies, but the majority of overweight people today harbor more fat on their belly than anywhere else on the body.

And there’s a reason for it. Today’s life is hectic, rushed, and stressful. We don’t routinely cook anymore, and when we do it’s not actually cooking at all. Instead, we warm up microwave meals, or mix something with water out of a box. If it can’t be ready in a few minutes, most people won’t bother with it.

SkinCare, Weight Loss, Woman Health, CelluliteJune 21, 2008 5:20 pm
Cellulite is a term used to describe the chain of wrinkled fat cells and subcutaneous connective tissue beneath the skin and which seems to be more prevalent in women than men; the thighs and buttocks might be the main areas that experience this but it can actually be found anywhere.

This is not a situation purely confined to those who carry excess weight; the lumpy substance that looks more like cottage cheese beneath the skin can affect slim, even sporting women as well.

Fat beneath the surface of the skin pushes against connective tissue causing it to give that dimpled look commonly known as cellulite. After many years of research, scientists still cannot determine the exact reason for its formation or why some are affected more than others but there may be some connection between toxins that enter the body and how certain fat cells store them.

This problem usually comes naturally with aging and similar to wrinkles that form in the face, it is actually the result of lower levels of collagen and elastin in the skin.

Women are more prone to hormonal imbalances as they age and the fat found in their thighs and buttocks where it forms is different to the fat in other areas, unlike men who rarely suffer with this condition.

Cellulite often goes unnoticed for the majority of the time for most people and is only seen when a person has their thigh muscles compressed in the case of squatting for example or when the skin is pinched in the thigh area and the puckered skin becomes apparent; when the fatty tissue can be felt but most women suffer with this.

Many factors can influence the buildup; ranging from the sex of the person to their age, genetic make-up, skin type and skin thickness, all have a part to play in its formation.

Currently there isn’t one single treatment that can rid a person of this condition because the cause has remained elusive despite considerable research into the area. One method that hides the cellulite quite well by puffing the skin is deep massage and an increasing number of clinics are now offering this therapy.

Perhaps the most drastic therapy is liposuction where fat is literally sucked from the body or the more expensive procedure of injecting certain chemicals in a process called mesotherapy.

Only temporary relief can be gained from both these procedures and liposuction despite its success at removing deep fat from large areas of the body, is not designed for the fats close to the surface as in the case of cellulite.

For people who are prone to the problem, there are no magic treatments for selective removal but there are now a number of creams on the market which are designed to help hide the effect it brings.

It can only really be reduced as part of an overall weight reduction program through adopting a healthy eating and living plan, together with increasing exercise, so that body fat is reduced rather than connective tissues.

Many toxins that accumulate in the body can be flushed out with regular amounts of water which some believe is still an effective way to keep the body free of harmful substances including the toxins which help with the formation of cellulite.

An important part of a balanced health and wellness program is managing your body composition and understanding what is a healthy body weight for your body type. A consistent Yoga practice, Yoga diet, and observance of Yoga principles and lifestyle habits can help you find this balance in managing your body weight.

Obesity is correlated to numerous health problems and diseases like heart disease, diabetes, musculo-skeletal disorders, digestive disorders, and high blood pressure. Obesity often shortens one’s life span. Excess body weight physically drains the body of vitality and energy.

Researchers from McGill University in Montreal found that the people who underwent bariatric surgery saw reductions in particular in the risk for breast and colon cancer . Many people see dramatic weight loss after such surgery.

People who are deemed morbidly obese typically are at least 100 pounds (45 kg) overweight. The researchers tracked 1,035 such patients who had bariatric surgery for five years. They also monitored 5,746 patients who matched the surgery group in age, sex and weight but did not have this surgery.

Those who underwent bariatric surgery had about an 80 percent lower risk of developing cancer, the study showed.
